Hairy & Stinky

Stapelia gigantea, otherwise known as Carrion Flower, Zulu Giant, Toad Plant or Starfish Cactus. An African native, the plant looks like a cactus, but it’s a non-spiny succulent in the milkweed family. The large (10″-16″), fascinating flower emits a malodorus aroma resembling the smell of rotting meat. This specimen is in a private collection, but you can enjoy one at bloom time indoors at your local botanical garden.
