Warm & Fuzzy

Some things in nature look ultra-cute, or warm & fuzzy, but may have a downside. The foliage and bark of the attractive marginal shrub Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is poisonous when ingested. The toxin is noted in the scientific name of the plant: Cephalanthin. Most humans wouldn’t try to eat it, but some pets may have a habit of chewing on random things. Birds, however, freely enjoy the seeds.

The caterpillar of the American Dagger Moth is awfully cute, and reportedly awfully irritating if handled. Those dramatic, contrasting black hairlike structures can break off when handled, releasing a toxin that causes a painful, stinging reaction.
