Roanoke’s giant illuminated star at the top of Mill Mountain. The Roanoke Star is said to be the world’s largest freestanding man-made illuminated star. Roanoke’s Norfolk & Western Railway station was originally built in 1905 in the Beaux Arts style. The building was radically re-designed in 1946 in the Streamlined Moderne style by noted industrial designer Raymond Loewy.
